Chahkooh Valley: The Natural Wonder
On beautiful Qeshm Island southern Iran, an awe-inspiring cross-shaped valley, ‘Chahkooh’, draws the attention of travellers and tourists from all around the globe and country, in the heart of a sandstone and limestone mountain. Chahkooh Valley is referred to as ‘Tangeye Chahkooh’ and Chahkooh, itself, translates to ‘Well Mountain’ in Farsi. About 100 meters deep, its tall walls are covered in big sponge-like holes and thin long parallel indentations. It’s located about 70 km from Qeshm City and right next to the East Chahkooh Village. The smooth edges, uneven holes and beautiful indentations are all footprints of many years of rainfall and wind. Do to the dry and hot climate of the landscape here; sweet drinkable water is of very high value. From all four sides, small canals and wells have been dug into the valley ground to redirect and store the water. The geographical orientation of this natural wonder is very interesting as the wide paths narrow down to about half a meter in some parts. Trekking from north to south, the inclination increases, from the flow of water, through the pathways. For many years the rainwater from this valley has provided this southern-Iranian village its drinking water. These wells and canals have been added so organically into the natural structure that they have added even more beauty to the already extraordinary valley. Watching the water flow through the timeless veins of the stones, many visitors have testified to being stunned at their view’s magnificence during times of rainfall.
