A very important aspect to consider while travelling to a foreign destination is its weather. Knowing the weather conditions puts travellers a few days ahead in their journey by allowing them to prepare better. To help you do this, goingIRAN has prepared the following regarding Iran’s weather conditions.
Iran is renowned as ‘the land of four seasons’. This is because of the existence of mountains, deserts, meadows, the ocean and its geographical location on the earth. These circumstances have created a situation where, in most seasons, summer and winter happen simultaneously somewhere in Iran. For example, at the beginning of winter when the north is very cold and snowy, the south is very warm and sunny. This unique phenomenon is something many travellers and tourists strive to experience while travelling to Iran.
The best months for skiing in Tehran, Tabriz, Shiraz, Ardebil, Urmia… etc. are November through January. At this time, many visitors that are not into skiing or snowboarding enjoy their time on desert tours. The day heat is tolerable, but the nights are very cold. It is said that the stars and the night sky are also at their closest to the earth during this season.
Spring is in April and the best month for travelling to Iran. In this season, all of the trees and flowers are blooming with fresh new leaves and blossoms. From April to June, the Anzali swamp is filled with ancient blossoming lotuses, which Iran is historically famous for.
In June the weather starts to heat up, but is still tolerable and suitable for travellers and tourists. Come July and August though, the southern cities of Iran become extremely hot and humid. If you’re in Iran at this time and are not used to very hot temperatures, you’re better off laying low in the northern and western cities. Most of the northern cities are moderate and cool, except for the coastal ones. The coastal cities sometimes become to hot and humid that they may seem unbearable. However the more mountainous areas are so cool that, such as Chaldoran County, not a single air conditioning unit is to found!
Nearing the end of the summer, from August to September, the weather begins to cool once again. It is also a very good time to visit and travel across Iran. In the following months of November and October southern cities are suggested as travel destinations, especially Kish and Qeshm Islands.
We can deduce that the climate in this unique eastern land is highly variable to the season and region. In the northwest of the country, winters are usually accompanied by heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures. The spring and fall are mild (averaging 20 – 25oC) and summers are hot and humid. Central and eastern Iran the winters are mild with occasional snowfall (0 – 15oC). The spring and fall are also mild, similar to that of the northwest. The summers are hot and arid (averaging 30-35oC). In the south, there are mild winters and very hot and humid summers (averaging 40oC). In general, Iran has an arid climate where the yearly precipitation of the entire country is about 250 millilitres or less. The cities on the border of the Caspian Sea, however, are quite different; they are very humid and observe steady precipitation of over 1,000 millilitres per year.
Generally, winter temperatures fluctuate from -5°C to 10°C and summers from 30°C to 40°C. Be sure to research and be educated on the weather of the destinations you are planning to visit, to make sure to pack the appropriate clothing.
