DOLAT ABAD GARDEN (Bagh-e Dolat Abad)

The Majestic Bagh-e Dolat Abad
Wandering through the desert-city of Yazd, it’s not unlikely for the heat to make one start wishing-for or even hallucinating on stumbling into a miraculous oasis of some sort, however Bagh-e Dolat Abad is certainly no hallucination. Built in 1747 and also known as Dolat Abad Garden, this lush eight hectare paradise is no playground. Except for maybe the almighty Khan, Mohammad Karim Khan Zand, who built it as his personal mansion! This beautiful garden (one of nine in Iran) has been an officially registered UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. Come along with goingIRAN to learn and discover more about this attraction!
An extraordinary lush traditional Persian garden with intricate architecture and artwork awaits the attention of eager travellers from all around. Once passed the tall mud-brick walls and towers, the tranquil water steam takes visitors for a nice stroll through the property. Walking towards the pavilion, one won’t be able to ignore the huge 33 meter tall badgir (wind-catcher tower). Badgir towers are old architectural technologies used to catch and transfer-down the winds of the arid plains. This particular wind-catcher is the tallest of its kind in Iran and, very likely, the whole world. Arriving at the pavilion, visitors are delightfully greeted by beautiful intricate stained glass and carved wooden doors. A marble fountain centers the main courtyard right where the winds come down from the badgir.
Standing directly beneath and looking up at the badgir has been known to hypnotise visitors with its delicate symmetry and beautiful design. After catching some cool air, walking around the halls continuously soothes the eyes for as long as they’re open. Tourists feel as if they’re walking in the times of the Zand Dynasty, when great feasts and festivities were held within these very walls.
When you’re spirit is fully saturated in all of the colors and grace of the pavilion, go for a nice stroll in the garden. Walking by a vineyard, pomegranate, cypress and cedar trees you’ll finally arrive at a coffee shop and restaurant. Depending on what you’re in the mood for head into one, or even better both! Patrons of the Bagh-e Dolat Abad coffee shop and restaurant enjoy a lovely meal or snack in a traditional Iranian setting. This desert estate will definitely leave its footprint in your memory of roaming around in Persia!
